I am an atheist. From the time I was sixteen years old I have been slowly evolving from an agnostic to an atheist. Actually it all started back when I was 6 years old. It was then that I discovered that the Tooth Fairy was just one of my family members. Then about a year later when my belief in the Easter Bunny was shattered I was beginning to be suspicious of all of my beliefs. It didn’t take more than a year for my belief in Santa Claus to be erased.
From the age of 11 to 16 I was fascinated with God and read the Bible numerous times. However the more I read it the more it appeared to be another wonderful fairy tale. Over the nearly 60 years that has ensued I have become increasingly hostile to all religions. This hostility has been prompted by the various religions themselves. Because of this hostility and total lack of belief, I have been told that I have no faith.
No Faith! That is completely incorrect. I have massive amounts of faith. Allow me to provide several examples.
I have absolute faith that either the sun will rise tomorrow as predicted or that it shall never rise again.
I have faith that when I drive my car down the highway, that the oncoming driver will remain in their lane and not enter mine and injure or kill me. Furthermore, I am positive that a rigorous study would prove that this “miracle” occurs 100% more often than prayers are answered. Actually, it has never been proven that what seems like the answer to even one prayer is anything other than a random coincidence.
I have reasonably strong faith that regardless of the time of day or day of the week that when I turn on the television, a commercial will be playing. Occasionally my faith in this is shaken, but it is such a rare event that my faith is soon rewarded with more commercials.
